Photo of the Day: September 1st, 2010

Kookaburra surprised me recently with this stunning portrait of a striking figure. I'm not really up on the fiction or how they manage to write in the celebrity appearances, but I can honestly say that I had no idea they had made Prince into a Transformer. This foppish figure is not only a perfect likeness of his Purpleness, but at 10" tall is also nearly life-size! I assume it transforms into a purple cadillac, or possibly a cuckoo clock. My sequined, purple velvet hat goes off to you, Kookaburra. Keep 'em coming!

If white parts are difficult to shoot, then clear parts are impossible. I proved this scientifically myself some months back by spending about 3 hours in the garage with 1500 watts of light and a salt shaker in a ziplock bag. So, I'm at a loss to explain this recent submission from Highprime. It appears to be a photograph of Clear Convoy from Beast Wars, but since that's impossible, he must have produced this image through some other means. Oh sure, there are ways. He could have soaked regular Convoy in vinegar for an hour, captured some kind of holographic image using lasers, or even--my god--killed regular Beast Wars Convoy and summoned its ghost from the dead. I guess I'm not exactly sure what he did, but I think we can all agree that perverting the laws of science and nature are far more likely to get you a nice image of a clear part than using a camera. Nice work, Highprime. Which impossible photographic task is next for you? Bigfoot? Loch Ness Monster? Sean Penn?

I had a tough time choosing which of Kookaburra's photos to showcase today for a few reasons. First, they're all really good, and second, I wasted an hour trying to figure out what a "kookaburra" is. I was going to guess it was some kind of ridiculous-looking bird and have fun rambling on about that in this post, but then I looked it up on wikipedia and discovered that it is in fact a ridiculous-looking bird, and completely lost interest. But let's have a look at that photo. It turns out that Kookaburra specializes in collecting ambulances and emergency vehicles, which could work out well if I can put her in touch with my hyper-active nephew, who collects G.I. Joe dolls with their limbs torn off. There's a certain kind of comfort in specializing only in certain kinds of Transformers; it narrows the field and shields you from the full epic futility of trying to collect them all. Me, I decided long ago to only collect the ones that turn into barracudas, and I only need one more to complete my collection.

It's been a while since any of us have bothered with a Photo of the Day post, partially because we had run out of new photos to comment on, but mainly because it had gotten to the point where I couldn't think of anything interesting to say about the 137th repaint of Starscream. But an exciting new shutterbug has appeared to lead us all to photographic panacea, with his digital camera held high, pockets stuffed with bulbs, his skin a healthy, pasty white from sitting in a dark room all day. Also, I imagine he wears a cape. HighPrime has submitted 396 photos over the past few weeks, and they all shine with heavenly glory. Even the shots of missiles. Today's photo depicts Roadbuster Ultra Magnus in a pose so striking and heroic that I decided to try it myself today while standing in line at the DMV. It didn't make the line go any faster, but people kept asking me for autographs, and weren't quite sure why. Thanks much, HighPrime!

TF 2010 Leader class Prime and Starscream

Posted by DJkevintron on Tuesday 16th of March 2010 09:22:43 AM.
Seibertron has relayed in box pics posted by The-Arker of Transformers 2010 Leader Class Optimus Prime and Starscream. Check out our listings for these two here: Optimus Prime and Starscream.

Here are pics of what I'm gonna call Battle Hook Prime. Notice the new battle hooks, the new head sculpt. Product/Assortment 95432/98431 (the lettering is rather small so I might be off). Item Description-"Optimus Prime is under no illusions about how dangerous Starscream really is. The Decepticon second-in-command might be a coward, but he's still smart and powerful enough to present a real threat to Earth. The Autobot leader has Human and Autobot agents combing the globe for the hiding air warrior. As soon as they find him, though, it will be Optimus Prime alone who goes in to bring him down." This is a level 5 figure.

Here are pics of what I'm gonna call Hand Cannon Starscream. Product/Assortment 94192/98431 (again, the lettering is rather small so I might be off). Item Description-"Optimus Prime may think him a coward, but Starscream never flees a fight out of fear alone. Every retreat is calculated to keep him alive long enough to return and destroy his opponents with overwhelming power. As long as the Autobots seek him in force, he will remain hidden. As soon as Optimus Prime ventures out alone, however, Starscream will strike." This is a level 4 figure.

Both figures come with 2 1.5v AA batteries, have lights, sound effects and voice. They are said to be scheduled for release "mid summer".

Figure it out Friday: December 18th, 2009

What is today's mystery part? I'm thinking blue raspberry...or perhaps mint. Whatever it is, it looks delicious. To find out just what it is, all you have to do is perform a shmax search. Once you've found the answer, post a shmax.com link to the details page for this part.
