You probably should write in an Apache rule to redirect all traffic attempting to go to shmax.com/Forums to shmax.com/forum. The reason for this is that my bookmark to the old forum still exists as a path but there is an access denied message. Any other attempts to get to the site, I get a 404. For example, the first search result on Google for "shmax forum" goes to a 404 because it still has the old URLs as results.

I received this error on topic reply. The post still went through tho.

I was wondering if the small size signature (the non-animated one) can have the item count or figure count shown instead of the figure or mold completion %.

Help Us Build the Database / D-35 Magamatron Black
November 28, 2011, 10:25:58 AM
I'm looking around and find this:
http://shmax.com/product_details/6825/d ... tron_black
Has a release date of 2010. My records show a release of 1999. Did this get reissued? I can't find anything about a 2010 release.

Shutterbug Club / Cell phone vs digital camera
October 31, 2011, 01:00:24 PM
I've pretty much given up on ever using my digital camera again for a couple of reasons.:
1. My cell phone has more megapixels and thus has the ability to take better pictures.
2. My cell phone can automatically upload photos online.

So what are your ideas about using a cell phone's camera over a digital camera?

The reason I thought about this question is because I found a "mount" for cell phones that could act as a tri-pod for taking better photos with one.

Help Us Build the Database / DoTM Crankcase versions
October 14, 2011, 04:36:00 PM
I already updated two records for the Crankcase hands versions when I noticed this:
http://shmax.com/product_details/9145/crankcase

For the "clipped" version I put in lot numbers 10601 to less than 11131. There have been > 11131 that have contained both clipped and remolded hands, or just two remolded hands. However this comments on this record has different info stating 10851 may have remolded hands. Is there any concensus on this?

Also, you may want to pass on approving my edit on the "clipped" version until it is decided how to relate this info in the database.

Appearance related only.

Chrome v14.0.835.202 m

After modifying a record, it "reloads" back to what a normal record view looks like. However there are two additional items that don't normally show up, being the blurb above the picture, and also the Help box on the left. So in this screen, the drop-down box "Watch eBay for" is escaping the div that it is in.

I decided to search for Kre-O (which is possible after the hyphen bug is fixed) and get results like this:
http://shmax.com/results/1?browse=0&searchterm=kre-o

Because of the large amount of "accessories" that these sets come with, you end up having a HUGE page to scroll through, even for 14 items. So in a case like this, I'm wondering if there could be a different way to display items like this.

For example, consider the idea that by default, a maximum of 10 items will be displayed in the (2nd) accesories column of the item info. If the number of accessories is over 10, then a button (ajax or such) saying "Expand" would appear, in which you could then click it and see all the rest of the things in the list.

I went to TRU today where they had a sign up saying you can get a free Kre-O figure with the purchase of any Deluxe Transformers or building toy. The toy I got was the Matrix Optimus Prime.
http://shmax.com/product_details/9101/m ... rime_kreon

Now, I was looking at the comments, and the TRU option isn't listed, but then I notice that there is a list of "Exlusively Available From" which lists 3 places. Since all three of those are US based (even if we add TRU), wouldn't that mean this item is not really exclusive anymore? I do already realise that the item itself isn't flagged as an exclusive item.

Help Us Build the Database / Thunderwing variant?
October 14, 2011, 10:48:22 AM
Nevermore on TFW has reported to have a Thunderwing variant, where he has 2 of them but they had different instructions.
http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/transform ... ing-2.html

Is it possible the US and the UK version have different instructions? What kind of consideration for the Shmax database is there for instruction variations (if they can be confirmed to be both US or UK versions) ?

At this time, the "Current Value" only appears on items that are in your collection, and only when you are browsing your own collection. If I just do a general search (using the search box on the upper left) the results do not show a "Current Value" ... err... value.

Since I not only use Shmax to track my own personal collection, but also for price appraisals, it saves a click into the actual package record just to see the value. However, even then, there is no "Current Value" (which we know is just some calculation) on the package record, but it does show the grid of appraisal values.

So maybe I'm requesting two things... :p

Now that there is a click required to expand a menu on the top menu bar, this makes the Forums drop down irrelevant. After clicking "Forums" it opens the drop down and then goes directly to the index. You have to be really fast to click the other options before the page changes.  <!-- s:? -->:?<!-- s:? -->

Recommendation: Make the Forums link have no children, similar to Home and News.  <!-- s:?: -->:?:<!-- s:?: -->

I was looking through my collection and was looking for items that had a current value of something other than unknown. But I started seeing items that had values that seemed quite odd. So I'll ask whether this is potentially caused by tampering, miscalculation or using too general a scope for something's value.

The first is McDonald's Blackout:
http://shmax.com/product_details/8079/blackout

It has really high values for MISB and W/Bag that would only seem to make sense if this particular item was purchased in a lot of some sort. In addition, my MISB price that I have entered doesn't even show as the low value, which shows $14.99 but my price was $0.50. The Price History chart is equally confusing as it shows an "Unknown" sale at $70.

Another oddity is this RTS Prowl:
http://shmax.com/product_details/7257/prowl

The value is skewed greatly by the extremely outlandish $400 MOSC sale that appears both in the chart and the appraisal data. The chart indicates there were 4 instances of this toy selling at over $100, which includes the mystery $400 sale.

So, where do you get these values from? Are they actual ebay auction values, or do you use the completed auctions that sold value? Even the Ebay results on the Prowl page are showing 2 Kre-O items, which is why I think it might be related.

There's probably more but those are just two I noticed.

I notice in the flash signature, some of the items (in green) are links, as such that the hand cursor replaces the arrow if I move over them. But if I click those "links" they don't actually do anything. Are they supposed to link to something?

Usually, when i select a sub-series like this:
http://shmax.com/results/2549?browse=0& ... n%20series

It will show the completion of that particular series, taking into consideration the entire tree back from which it came. However, this shows (on the lower right) that some users have acquired 6/6 toys, but there are only 4 in the selection! Where are the other two coming from, the Europe section?

Video Games Discussion / The Shmax of video games?
July 22, 2011, 10:20:03 AM
I found a site that looks to be like this site, but for video games. I'm going to try it out when I get home tonight and see how it is.

Alright, currently my obsession is going to be G1 Jetfire. I've been asking around (still have one question left unanswered, but I'll check my email tonight and get back to ya) and have compiled all the info I can. Here is a summary, Shmax style. Before I get to far ahead, I know there are some transitional versions out there but it is impossible to determine originality vs rebuilt Jetfires this far out. Especially since you can't tell which Bandai stamp a toy may have if it is MISB.

First up, G1 Plain Wing Jetfire
http://shmax.com/product_details/781/jetfire

This article needs to be cloned, since there are 2 plain wing Jetfire toys. The main difference is the stamping. One has the square Bandai Logo and the other has the word Bandai logo. Which also brings up the question of whether this article should list Bandai as the manufacturer rather than Hasbro.

In addition we have the two Macross versions:
http://shmax.com/product_details/5291/jetfire
http://shmax.com/product_details/5292/jetfire
Which, in each case, are also not manufactured by Hasbro, but in fact Matsushiro.

From what my research has shown, it is quite unlikely (and thus not ever reported as such) as a Matsushiro Jetfire showing up in any releases other than the US. Unless an MISB or AFA foreign Jetfire shows up proving otherwise, we'll have to accept this as a fact for now. Another is the fact that it is not known which Bandai stamp showed up in non-US releases as well.

So this leads me to the next question, since 3 more Jetfire items need to be created, I'm guessing only db mods have this ability. The first one was already covered. The other two are the two European versions.

Milton Bradley released Europe 1985
Hasbro released Europe 1985?

The Hasbro box is the same as the MB box but has the Hasbro logo instead. Everything else, including the multiple languages, are the same.

My sig has shown me something that makes me want to ask some questions.

The number of figures, which is related to the Shmax ranking, and also it shows up in the sigs, etc. Now I know there are two different numbers: Total items and Total figures. Since you can have multiple figures in an item and that's fine.

However, the part of the sig that has the rarest, or no other collector has this "toy" comes up for Skywarp Numeral Candle. So since we've started adding artifacts to the site, are these actually being counted as a figure? Both for the Shmax ranking or whatever else?

Only asking because the Skywarp candle isn't a toy, and as such shouldn't count as a figure, BUT does count as an item. Not sure how to relate this properly, maybe you figure out what I'm getting at.

It looks like maybe there is a packaging variation for DOTM Mech Tech laserbeak. Take a look at this:

Can anyone else confirm?
