As I understand it, you won't need anything fancier than some white foam core, tape, and some easily positionable lights. Oh, and a tripod if you want to do long exposures, which several folks have found to be pretty key. Mileage may vary. I don't know if a 3.2 mp is any worse than a 7 mp camera when you consider that the average image we use here on the site is no longer than 800 x 800. Good luck!

Well I'll try and scrape up the time this coming week to dig up materials and... time... I don't keep much of anything in-box but I can at least provide loose pics. I'll keep you posted!

Still working on that lightbox thing. Instead of creating a lightbow I think what I'll do is simply buy some white fabric in place of the red I am using in this included shot. The lighting in my house is pretty good so it should do me pretty well. We'll see how it goes.

The red cloth tinted my photo pretty bad. It took some photoshopping to get out and as you can see (maybe you can't but I can) it didn't all come out. so much for night  photos... I'm hoping the white cloth and another light source will fix this.

Hi Hellscream, those photos are actually very nice--I would say the lighting is just about perfect, and really the only thing you're missing is the white background. I still recommend making the box over using fabric, however. Any kind of fabric will have texture, and all those little nooks and crannies, however small, will get picked up, especially in a sharp, high-resolution photo like we use here. Or it might be okay, if the fabric you use is really high-grain. But really, a box is the way to go. I made mine from a single piece of foam core, which you can buy from any art or office supply shop for a few bucks. I can fold it up and tuck it away when I'm not using it, and it's also nice because it has sides on it, which block out reflecting light from things like a red bed spread, and you can also clip lights onto them.

It would be awesome if you really got set up and could start contributing photos! You may have noticed the parts database that has cropped up over the last week or so--we're in desperate need of photos for those parts!

Pretty cool! Who is that? I searched the database for "red blue black grey awesome robot" but didn't turn up anything. Also, if you move that backdrop back a bit so that the shadow falls on the floor, use macro mode to get tighter focus, move the big blue thing out of the way (it should be in a separate photo) and turn up the brightness a bit, I reckon you'll have a pretty decent photo to submit!

Yeah, I nabbed one of those by accident. I actually ordered the micromaster trains from a dude on ebay and he sent me this by mistake. I hit him up and ended up purchasing it for 260$. Ouchy on the wallet but man was it worth it.

Near impossible to pick 'one' favorite, but I do happen to like this guy alot, especially since I cleaned all the silver gunk off him.

I like that guy, but I'm sort of confused by his weapon. At first I assumed it was a whip, but then I see he's holding it like a mug of beer, with the whip part hanging down like the tassels on a little girl's banana bike. Seems like the last thing you'd want swinging around while you're trying to chop something, but what do I know?

The metallic red is this really deep crimson - almost a mirror finish. And the non-metallic red paint is so glossy I have to wipe fingerprints off it after I transform him, LOL.

An ambulance specialist? Cool! You know, somebody should really go through the database one of these days and make sure that all the ambulances are tagged "ambulance". So far it looks like we have a few dozen tagged as such, but I have to wonder if we've missed some:

Yep. I took them for the TF wiki. I want to try and redo the Takara Animated Ratchet again, his white got kind of washed out.

I collect emergency vehicle Transformers, yes - though really, what drives me bonkers is people calling things which are NOT ambulances 'ambulances' (Movie Ratchet, for example.) I could go through and at least sort out the various fire rigs - someday I want to put up a primer for TF collectors about the differences between trucks, engines, light rescues, heavy rescues, tenders, and ambulances. Of course it doesn't help that many of the transformers are based on completely fictitious fire rig alt modes. :?

Yep, we've learned that it's never as simple as "ambulance", or even "police car". That's why we didn't include those two in our "form" tree, and instead use tags to call 'em out.

I don't know if you're still interested in taking pictures, but I see that you have at least 78 figures (http://www.shmax.com/contribute_info/1?info_filter=88&c_id=1219) that we need photos for. Our guidelines are a little more strict than those of the wiki, but if you don't mind a little challenge we'd sure love to show your work!

I've tried uploading some pictures I have that fit the guidelines (ROTF legends Ratchet - btw, you need a "metallic copper" option on the color scheme tree), but it wouldn't work. Whenever I hit the "submit" it returned an error.

We'll see - I personally prefer a grayish background for figures with lots of white on them, so it'll require a revamping of my set up to get a pure white background.

I would just use "gold" to mean copper. We can't have EVERY color in the world, so sometimes you have to double-up. If you're seeing errors of any kind, please report them immediately! If you're getting an error, please cut 'n paste it--it should be all I need. Otherwise I'll need to know the steps you took, the browser you're using, the music you had playing, etc.

As for white backgrounds, that's only required for the "reference" shot (used for browsing, mainly). You can use any kind of background you like for the gallery shots, though we do still ask that it be in focus, brightly-lit, and all that other good stuff. I know that's not very clear from reading the guidelines--I plan to rewrite them yet again to clear that up.

Sadly I can't this weekend.
I've learned a lot from your tutorials.... right now its an equipment issue.  Lights and background need to be upgraded. Also my camera won't focus on the edges of the photo, just the center.  It makes photographing large figures difficult.
I do want to contribute, but I'm short on time right now to get anything meaningful done.  I'll just be practicing with some candids here until I'm in a better spot.

Some quick tips:

- adjust your camera's white balance. Your shadows are bluish, but you want a smooth neutral grey.
- mute your lights so you don't get those specular hot spots. You'll also get softer shadows, which are very desirable. This usually means building a lightbox (or buying a cheap light tent), but you can also just put dampers around your lights (be careful not to burn the joint down)

Other than that you're on yer way!

Ha! You should see the pre-processed image.  The incandescent light makes everything yellow!
And I have to put the bulbs close on the background to get it white with a hotspot.  I've tried to diffuse the light but I just don't have enough to make it work.  
I wish I could adjust the shutter speed and just have it left open for a good long low light exposure.  The white balance cannot be adjusted on my camera.

Unless you bought it in the 70's, or made it yourself out of a shoebox, chances are good your camera can do more than you think it can. What's the make and model? I happen to have the manual for nearly every camera known to man right here...

SONY DSC-W30
F/5.2
1/15 exposure
ISO - 80
+2 step exposure bias
19mm focal length
3 max aperture
Pattern metering mode
no flash
auto white balance

Hi Tusko,

I'm still learning with my camera too, but one good tip I picked up I might be able to pass on: Im not familiar with your model of camera, but if you can control the aperture, try stopping it down a bit to increase the depth of field. F11 seems to be a nice setting for me for most figure shots and will bring a lot of the away-from-center detail into sharper focus.
Remember if you do this you'll need to either leave the shutter open for longer (tripod!), or increase to ISO 100/200. You might even get away with ISO400 but any higher and you'll probably start getting some ugly noise showing up.

Sadly I don't know how to control the F stop on my automatic camera.  Its not that fancy.
Ideally I agree with you, low diffuse light, sensitive film and long exposure should give the most details.  I just don't have the right light yet.

I like that you can see my camera and set up reflection in the Bumblebee picture!  Just in case there is a copy right issue, my stamp is on it as an amateur enthusiast!

I changed my background material and lighting and camera and well... I guess things are more acceptable now.  I just need to work on my composition a bit more, I think.

The same way you add photos to the product records. Have you not discovered the part details pages? One way to get there is to start off on the product detail page, then click on the name of the part you're interested in on the bottom portion of the page. Another way is to click on the part name from the list when browsing products. And so on.

I think so too.  I can't get edge retention, take a picture of red things, or have contrast of an off white on white feature.

I changed my backdrop to a white poster board.... I seem to have better luck with normal paper and my lighting is all wonky again.   Inferno is still cool!

I still need more light and my background seems to be unacceptable with a faint yellow tint.

Assuming your goal is to create figure photos for shmax.com,  you want to put your strongest light(s) directly overhead (I believe Highprime uses two overhead lights, and nothing else). If you do that the shadow will pool directly at its feet in a soft puddle, and avoid the 15-shadows-going-everywhere phenomenon that you have in these photos. For the yellow tint, make you're you're using natural white light bulbs, and not the typical house lamp bulbs. If you're still having trouble with yellowishness, experiment with your camera's white balance control. There are usually only a handful of preset settings (tungsten, fluorescent, etc), and one of them should do the trick. Keep at it!

I'll try to get some natural white lights.
Currently I have a strong halogen light directly above the figure.... but my white balance is set for incandescent light.  Maybe that's what's tinting the poster board I'm using.  The pure white printer paper I had before was a bit better/more reflective, but the seams between sheets really bugged me.  A nice white cotton cloth also seems to work nicely.

Halogen might be okay, as long as you set your white balance correctly--some cameras even have a "halogen" white balance setting. Does yours?

The paper issue can be tricky. I went to the printing counter at Office Depot and asked them for 4 feet off of their big roll, and just ran it all down the back and across the floor of my light tent. It works okay, but it tends to get scuffed-up. Highprime (I think it was) went to Home Depot and bought a big sheet of white flexible laminate, which can be wiped clean. They haven't had that any of the Home Depots I went to, but your mileage may vary.

We don't typically recommend cloth--you'll either get wrinkles, or visible grain in high-res photos. But do whatever works for you!

I hate that toy. I've got cannonball floating around in one of my storage tubs somewhere and he gets a pass for his deco alone. Otherwise, that toy needs to be melted in a pit.

HA!  I thought he was pretty original.

I love the way the legs come together to transform.  I also think he captures "Autobot" quite well, short, squatt and armored, paneled and bulked right up.

My biggest gripe is the visible head in alt mode.  I HATE that.  Generally though I think he's fun.

I'm having some second thoughts (coupled by my original idea to sell some TFs) since the idea of the display isn't working out as I envisioned. I made a light box, and got some lights. Ive done some test shots and am not too happy with them.
I'm sure I probably need better bulbs for my lights but I think I may need a better camera also.

What kind of camera are you using? how many megapixels  is it? What kind of bulbs are you using? What are the watts on them?

I have alot of items I can submit to this site I just need better quality pics. I got stuff still in packages that we're missing and I have alot of opened items that we need pics for. as well as weapons and instruction sheets. Just so much stuff but I cant get my pics right. I'm very familiar with photoshop so if I can just get some slightly better pics I'll be able to start submitting them.

Antron007, I made my "light box" out of a couple of sheets of white poster board (construction paper) on my old drafting table.  (so its inclied a few degrees.)  I used 1 halogen overhead desklight, and two 100W incandescent desk laps for the kinda overhead/side lighting.  That's why I have a million shadows.

I am using a FinePix F300EXR point and shoot.  I find the white balance is the most important feature, its about 15MP.

The subjects are nice and sharp, but you've still got those darn shadows shooting everywhere (and it looks like you're doing a lot of Photoshop work--once you get in the zone, all you should be doing is tweaking the levels/exposure/brightness). Suggestion: use a more powerful bulb overhead, and tone back the ones on the side. Also, are you using an enclosed tent?

It's not a Transformer but I thought I'd share this anyway. It will always be my favorite toy of all time.  It's a custom repaint of Ceremonial Luke Skywalker.  I got this ultra exclusive from a friend for Xmas a few years ago.

Keep up the nice work regardless.

I have a hard time justifying the cost for 3rd party stuff.  I mostly just support TFcon stuff since its a fan run con.  Plus I just picked up the Ironhide junker so I haven't had time to accessorize him.  I hope to find the crawler for him to at least get him into a van mode one day.

I'v seen pics of legends Thundercracker and Blackjack on Superion. I figured sinsce TC and Starscream were the same mold I'd give putting my SC on mine a shot. This is how it turned out. I really like how SCs colors compliment Superion.

Thanks guys. Hey Tusko, I'm not sure if you have a Big Lots store in your neck of the woods but, if you do you may still find them there. You might get lucky. My local Walmarts just did't buy TFs for a wave or two but I end up finding a few nice finds at a TJ Maxx. I've seen Screamer and Megs w/ pals at Big Lots maybe 2 months ago. I know, regions very and all but, if you like the thrill of the hunt, it wouldn't hurt to try.

My area usually get things 6-8 weeks after they are officially released. I've mail ordered a few things but I really like finding them, and being able to select the package, maybe spot a defect. I always look at the paint jobs. If there is more than one there, I definitely compare them. With mail order, you just get what you get.

I've found some great finds in the oddest places. I landed Generations Skullgrin for $10 (usd) less than 2 years ago. New in box. Where, do you ask? A record shop called Flipside in Michigan on my way to the last Nine Inch Nails concert. They had records, cds, t-shirts, and collectibles. ;) That figure plagued me because any time I saw him I didn't have the cash for him. I favor C/H/U/G figures and that was mold I'd seen a bunch of times but just missed out on. It was so cool to find him years later, in a record shop, at a great price. (This was when they were just starting to go up in price.)

So I guess the moral of my story is never lose hope. Even if it's the crazy gold one, I'll own an MP Megatron one day. Let's be real, he's a money maker. They'll put out another MP Megs in the next couple of years. So, three cheers for hoping. :)

Cool, who is that? I just picked up a new camera myself, Tusko. Hope to have some pictures to share (of my beloved/accursed GD-99 Aquarion (http://www.shmax.com/product_details/20665/chogokin_aquarion)) as soon as I finish reading the manual, which is 400+ pages long. I'm thinking sometime in mid-2017...

Using a Nikon D5500:



It's not the most glamorous shot in the world, but I like that you can read all the little stampings and other details fairly easily. The particularly neat part as that I didn't have to do any post-processing (not even levels)--this is straight out of the camera.

He's a fun character on the cartoon.  Your camera should serve you well.  I have the D5100 and I quite like it.  I just picked up a 18-70mm lens for it and its got great colour.

If we don't get proper bodies for the proper Headmasters from Hasbro or Takara I am going to be so pissed. I'll still absolutely love the Titans Return line, but I'll be pissed at the fact that non-Headmaster characters got to be Headmasters before the "real" ones got their proper remakes.

Thank you for the kind words my tri-Klopsian friend!  My pics have poor white balance and suffer from being over-exposed but I'm having fun!  Nice to hear you like them too!
