Since not all toys are created equal. I'm making a separate LEGO thread.

One thing you want to keep in mind about LEGO is that a simple parts swapping automatically makes it a custom.

With that in mind, the torso is not your typical LEGO torso it was custom made/casted by someone in Taiwan. As you can see, the torso grooves to simulate the female form. The pauldron is another custom (3rd party if you will) piece bought from the store Brickforge. Everything else is LEGO made, just obtained from different minifigures in different sets. Couldn't tell you from who exactly since I have all pieces sorted in parts - mold parts if you will :).

I think he's my favorite minifigure I've made so far. Love Wrex, such a shame he's not a squadmate anymore. Also, Shepard is in the picture to show the progress I've made with him. Now I just need to tackle his helmet, make a few more touch ups and I'll be happy with him.

Wrex's face and torso are decals I bought from a fellow LEGO builder. He designed them way back when the original Mass Effect was released. The actual Krogan body is a bunch of regular LEGO pieces built onto a minifigure. As for Shepard, his armor, vambraces and gun are 3rd party custom accessories. The rest is all legit LEGO pieces. I modded the armor and added decals to it. Decals are a mixture of my own and someone else's.

Cool! How do you make a custom model like this? I'm sure that each of the pieces you would need exist somewhere, but can you special order them, or do you just have to collect every damn set in the world?
Title: Re: The LEGO Thread
Post by: SoS on July 11, 2012, 09:27:52 AM
Well that's something you just build using your imagination while using the source material, lots of trial and error involved. Once someone builds something like that, they either give others and idea on how/what pieces they used to build it so they can build their own; or don't bother to do so at all. Kind of like anyone who makes custom Transformer figures, oftentimes the customizer will say what figures were used in making the kitbash, and for those that don't it's not too hard to figure out what was used on TF customs (not a lot of parts compared to something like LEGO).

As for the pieces, yes they do exist, cutting and splicing together brick pieces is a BIG no-no in the LEGO community. You have to use existing LEGO pieces otherwise, it's not a LEGO build. Builders usually have the pieces already from LEGO sets that they own when they start working on something like this. Pieces can be bought separately through LEGO's website, but they do not have a big selection, very limited in fact. There's a resource/database site that shows all existing parts. The main feature of the site is their "store", which I linked you to a few months back when discussing the toyline expansion/setting up a store. When you click on say a 1x1 brick it will list all the colors that have been released to date, you can click on the particular color you are looking for then it will give you a listing of all the users who are selling that 1x1 brick in that particular color.

Disclaimer: Excuse the crappy picture. Weather was not very co-operative, dark clouds/thunderstorm, when I took the picture.

LAW and ORDER

These guys are characters I created when I was a kid. Created to be villains to my fan character, Wingblade (more on him later). Law (white suit) and Order (black suit) are fraternal twins and Two-Face's top lieutenants.

Law is a unscrupulous lawyer who, ironically, represents Two-Face's evil side. He's an uncaring, sleazy, loud mouth who uses the law to his advantage. Personality, think stereotypical main villain/bandit in cowboy movies.
Favorite weapon: Twin Revolvers

Order is the spy/assassin of the duo. A suave, cool, calm, ladies-man. He is an assassin with a sense of honor. He represents Two-Face's conscious/law-abiding side. Personality, think James Bond.
Favorite weapon: Various twin  pistols.

You're a master, SoS. How many of these little guys do you have at this point?

I own roughly 1232 officially released minifigs, give or take a few. As for my custom minifigs, probably in the 50's. I'm not quite sure.

THE BAT & THE CAT

Still working on Catwoman. Need to fix the lens on the goggles.

ROBIN

Here's my version of Robin (Tim Drake), obviously Arkham City inspired. Staff is collapsible.

BATMAN: ROGUES GALLERY SET #1

The Riddler: Got a new outfit for him (based on his B:TAS look). Still need to finish modding his staff.

The Penguin: I think he's pretty much done. I have an assortment of umbrellas for him. This one is his blade-version.

Black Mask: The underworld boss is ready to torture any enemies that threaten his grasp on Gotham.

THE SCARECROW
"Courage is self-deceit. The universal truth is fear."

Version 1

Version 2

In this version, his staff is more tech-based, at the bottom is a liquid container that allows the fear gas/liquid travel through the staff to be release from the the blade. Thus allowing Scarecrow to release fear gas as he swings his scythe.

BATMAN: ROGUES GALLERY SET #2

Deadshot
I found a better torso to use on him; once I swap it out I think I'll be close to finished with him.

Talia al Ghul
Not much really to say about it, other than it's a very simple take/design.

Bane
He's an amalgamation of my favorite Bane designs the original Knightfall representation, The Batman (the scrawny design, not the Red Hulk-thing), and Justice League: Doom (the one sleeve covering). I wanted him to be taller than a regular minifig so I added a modded tile piece to his torso/abdomen. I had also added 1x1 tiles on his legs, but I'm thinking of removing them since they look kind of weird.
